Back in the USA
We got back from Thailand this past weekend and are equal parts glad to be home and wishing we were still on that grand adventure. We missed fresh salads, celebrating Thanksgiving, safe tap water, and interactions without language barriers. We loved discovering the beautiful culture, diving, and eating all the Thai food. Yes, there will be many posts about the trip coming to the blog in the next two months. Stay tuned!

Smoking in the Philippines Could Land You in Prison for 4 Months
Smoking in public will be banned in the Philippines. Nearly a third of the adult population smokes in the country, so they are trying to improve health by creating laws around it.

Thailand in Mourning
Thailand’s king, the world’s longest-reigning monarch (70 years!), passed away on October 13, and the country is in mourning. Government officials and the Royal Family is in a year-long mourning period, while the country is in a 30-day mourning period. This means activity in the country is very subdued and tourists should be respectful of the traditions and requirements. This article gave a good look at what that means. I’ll be arriving in Thailand as the 30-day mourning period ends, so I’ll be playing it by ear.

Google Trips is Live
Google is always tinkering with new tools to improve our lives and one of the most recent is Google Trips. This app gathers all your trip details into one place while also giving suggestions about food and things to do. You can also download your information to use it offline also.

Professional Photographer for Your Travels
I’ve had a handful of trips where I come back and I have zero photos with me or my travel companions in them! To fix this and to provide a priceless souvenir, Flytographer allows you to hire a photographer at your destination. The package options range from a quick 30-minute session to a more involved shoot. Would you use Flytographer?

Airplane Food?
I’ve heard stories from several friends about how the airplane food was their downfall when traveling internationally. As this article says, even adventurer Anthony Bourdain avoids airplane food! I would suggest buying food in the airport before you board the plane.

Iceland
In my last Fearless Wanderlust post, I shared a report about Iceland and the concerns about tourism’s effects on the environment and culture. Mapping Megan posted this informative article about what to know before you travel to Iceland.

Thai Islands Shut Down
Speaking of destruction from tourism, Thailand has shut down tourism in three more islands off the coast of Phuket: Koh Khai Nok, Koh Khai Nui, and Koh Khai Nai. With more than 4,000 daily visitors, you can imagine the destruction of beaches and reefs that the traffic can cause.

Houston, Texas
At the beginning of the month, I spent Labor Day Weekend exploring and eating my way through Houston, Texas! It was a fun trip focused around food, art, and friends. Check out the three posts about Houston here.

Don’t Swim with Wildlife
A kayaker was caught on a drone video swimming with an orca. Now, his act is being investigated by the Department of Conservation as “harassing, disturbing, injuring, or killing a marine mammal” and is punishable by two years in jail or up to a quarter million dollar fine. It is illegal to swim 100 meters of a whale.

Why Vacation?

Trips Take People Fearless Wanderlust Fearless CaptivationsHello, adventurers! How’s your traveling going so far? You’ve got about four months left in the year for a new travel adventure. Let me know in the comments where you’re headed!

The ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ Story You Haven’t Heard
Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love (one of my favorites!) wrote this article for Conde Nast Traveler about an experience she had in Indonesia during that trip. It’s such a beautiful story and very relevant in today’s world. Give it a read!

Adventure is Closer Than You Think
Speaking of Elizabeth Gilbert, for the 10th anniversary of Eat, Pray, Love‘s release, the publishers released Eat, Pray, Love Made Me Do It, a collection of essays from those who created their own journeys inspired by the book. Travel has an incredible way of healing people, but this interview about the book reminds us that you don’t need to hop on a plane or spend a lot of money to make powerful life changes. Self-love can start with going to the gym, spending time with friends and taking more walks in the park.

How to Save Money While Traveling
This month, I posted some money-saving tips to use while traveling. Take a look and share your own ideas.

Win a Trip Through These Contests

The Trials of Iceland Tourism
Iceland has seen a tremendous amount of growth in tourism in the last five years. In fact, visitation has increased 264 percent! As you can imagine, this increase is raising many questions. How will the tourism affect the environment? Having previously relied on fishing, Iceland’s economy is now putting more importance on tourism. This means more flights to Iceland and more tourist companies. Will this change the culture? Can Iceland build up its infrastructure, like better roads, to support tourism? The country is very hopeful in moving forward. Skift did an excellent analysis of the changes in Iceland. It’s definitely something to think about when you travel.

Gone to Houston!
I’m visiting Houston next week. I’ve been a couple of times before but this will be the first time with lots of time for exploration. What should I see, do, and eat? Please leave your suggestions below!

The National Park U.S. Road Trip
How about visiting all 47 national parks and road tripping around the U.S. in two months?! Someone created a route for you and the map has got me imagining what beautiful sights you’ll see along the way. Check out the article here.

Visit Singapore for Michelin-Star Street Food
Mr. Chan Hon Meng, now 51, has been preparing Soya Sauce Chicken for 36 years. His street food stall in Singapore – Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle – is now the FIRST to have a Michelin star! Big congrats to him! The food is an great value too: half a chicken is $7 and there are dishes for $3! A small fraction of what a Michelin-star restaurant would cost.

Don’t Expect Travel to Solve All Your Problems
I liked reading this blog post by Adventurous Kate. So many times, we read stories about how travel saves relationships, creates businesses and improves lives, but the stories should have an asterisks by them. Kate gives all the reasons why you shouldn’t drop everything and travel when you want to fix something in your life.

Marfa
Marfa, Texas has long been on my to-travel list but the journey there is a little tedious (almost eight hour drive from Austin or a flight to El Paso and 3 hour drive) and it’s a good stay for an extended weekend. It’s got its gem eats, bohemian vibes, and beautiful views. Have you been? How many days would you recommend staying?

The Purpose Hotel Kickstarter Open
I told you about the upcoming Kickstarter for The Purpose Hotel and I’m excited to tell you it is now live! When staying in this hotel, every part of your stay will benefit a life. The products, like soap and furniture, will be created by companies making a difference. Your fees will go to amazing causes fighting human trafficking and improving the lives of children. The first hotel will be in Nashville and the goal is to build hotels all over the world. Their deadline to raise money is September 2nd.

To Thailand!
I’m so excited to tell you I’ve booked a trip to Thailand in November! My boyfriend and I will be traveling to six places in two weeks, including a liveaboard scuba trip. I’m excited to experience the culture, eat all the food and relax on the beach! If you have any recommendations on places to stay and things to see in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Phuket, please let me know.

Where’s your dream trip?
We’ve all got a list of beautiful and inspiring places we want to visit. I’d love to know what city or country is at the top of your list? Internationally, Thailand has been at the top of mine for a while along with Australia, Iceland, Japan and newly added Portugal. Please tell me your top places in the comment section below!

Fearless Wanderlust June 2016 Fearless Captivations | This month's wanderlust inspiration feature Fearless Wanderlust includes Brexit, Chicabrava, Reset Retreat, and the best dim sum in Hong Kong!

Find a Job Overseas
A new website called Jobbatical can help you find a short-term (at least one year) job in another country. If you’d like to use your skills and travel the world, check out the website!

Volunteer Overseas
If you’d rather do charity work, a website called Workaway can help connect you to opportunities in over 155 countries.

Wellness and Adventure at Reset Retreat
Want to get real relaxation and re-focus on what’s most important to you? Reset Retreat is a luxury women’s personal growth, yoga and adventure retreat. Their signature Belize trip is happening November 1-6 and you can get $200 off with the code ‘ANITA.’ (Disclosure: using this code will give me credit with the company.) They are also now booking for their new weekend retreat in Austin happening September 15-18.

Venice is Sinking
Yes, you read that right. They’ve measured a foot drop in the last century and predict six more feet in this century, by 2100. That year is a long time from now, but with the beauty of Italy and amazing eats, maybe you should bump this country higher on your travel list nevertheless!

Surf and Explore at Chicabrava
If you are a female and want to visit the beach, learn to surf and experience another country, check out Chicabrava. This girls-only surf camp in Nicaragua has been my radar for a while because one of my childhood dreams was to be a surfer and this camp sounds so much fun!

World’s Best Restaurants 2016
With the newly released World’s Best Restaurants list, I’m sure the destinations of these restaurants will be added to many foodies’ lists. Wouldn’t it be incredible to experience?

Best Dim Sum in Hong Kong
I’ve read that the most authentic and fresh dim sum can be found in a restaurant called Lin Heung in Hong Kong. This restaurant has been around for at least eight decades with the original chefs still at the helm.

Win a Trip!
Visit beautiful Italy for cooking lessons, boat trips and private dinners.

What does Brexit mean for Travelers?
Last week, the UK voted to leave the European Union. What has resulted is great financial impact on the world economy. The British pound is now at the lowest value against the American dollar, so travel will seemingly cost less than usual but hotels and other travel companies will raise their rates to make up for it. In the long-term, travel may require visas, but that is still to be decided as the EU and UK figure out the terms of their separation. There are lots of great articles about Brexit and Afar has one for travelers.

If you could recommend one place to visit in the world, where would it be? What activities would you recommend?

Cool Find: Hotel Rooms Hanging Off the Side of a Mountain
Visiting Machu Picchu is on my to-travel list and I might need to make a stop in Cusco to hike up this mountain and stay in these hotel pods! The view looks beautiful and the experience would be terrifying and thrilling.

Top 25 World Landmarks
Speaking of Machu Picchu, it topped TripAdvisor Travelers’ list of top 25 world landmarks. While I would have certainly added the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona to the list, I was glad to see the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba and The Alhambra – both amazing, historic places in Spain – on the list.

How to Budget and Save to Travel
This month, I posted about 15 tips that can help you budget and save for travel. Hopefully it helps for your future travel plans!

WIN
Why Get Travel Insurance
I’m an advocate for getting travel insurance when you travel internationally because you never know what could happen. You could get into a physical accident or become ill from something you ate. There could be an emergency at home, needing you to buy an unexpected flight back. You could have all your stuff stolen or get lost by the airline. Travel insurance might not be able to help you with all the stress but it can help you save a lot of money in these situations and in some cases, be life or death. This story illustrates a dire instance of why travel insurance is beneficial. If you’re looking to get travel insurance for your next trip, I recommend World Nomads. While I haven’t needed to use it, it’s an affordable cost for peace of mind.

Yoga Retreats
I’ve been eyeing yoga retreats because being able to practice yoga and explore beautiful places sounds like lots of fun. Check out Yogascapes if you’re interested. I love their options of location. If you have a recommendation, please let me know!

Best Time to Visit a U.S. State
If you’re trying to cross all 50 states off your to-travel list, this handy article gives you the ideal month to visit each one. It gives September or October as the best time to visit Texas (for the State Fair – ha!), so get your ticket and come visit! I’ll tell you all the best things to see in Austin!

Earpiece that Translates Foreign Languages in Real-Time
How cool is this?! Waverly Lab’s Pilot is an earpiece that will translate French, Spanish, Italian or English, depending on what you choose on the accompanying app. The $250-300 device will open crowdfunding soon and hope to ship in the fall. This will be a useful tool for business and leisure travelers.

61 Travel Tips
This is a great list of travel tips! I agree with the majority of them, and I’m sure I’ll take some of these tips on my next trip.

Sail Away With MedSailors
I’ve been eyeing Yacht Week, a days-long sailing adventure, because it looks fun but I’m not too interested in their activities, mainly the nightly docking for a big rave-like party. I found MedSailors recently and they seem similar but less on the partying and more on the excursions. I think it would be a fun experience with a group of friends. Have you ever done something like this or know of any similar companies?

The Year of the National Park
You don’t need to go far to find adventure. Try a National Park in the U.S. There are plenty of beautiful places to visit. Check out these 10 big events at National Parks this year and this list of the best parks. Which National Park would you recommend visiting?

Sleeping with Sharks
Ok, who’s brave enough to sleep in this glass tank as sharks swim around?  The opportunity was part of Airbnb’s Night At series and involves a shark aquarium in France.

Take a walk on the wild side – Win a trip!

A New Kind of Camping
The pictures from Alison Turner’s blog have me convinced that I need to stay in a Forest Service Fire Lookout in my future. These towers are no longer active and being in remote places usually give incredible views. They provide a structure (no tent needed) but do not have running water or electricity. See the full list of lookouts for rent here.

Where to Play with Foxes in Japan
Move over, cute pigs swimming in the Bahamas. This Fox Village in Japan is the new goal. For 100 Yen (90 cents USD), you can play with foxes! If you want an adventure a little closer to home, check out this dog sanctuary in Costa Rica.

Fredericksburg Travel Guide
In February, I enjoyed a weekend getaway to Fredericksburg. Take a look at the travel guide I put together.

Best Beaches in Thailand
I’ve probably mentioned before that I’m wanderlusting for Thailand. This list of the best beaches in Thailand has some dreamy photos!

Charleston
At the beginning of this month, I enjoyed a long weekend in Charleston. I’ve got two more posts coming out this week about the trip, but here are my recommendations for the best things to do in Charleston to tide you over.

Best Cities in North America
You don’t need to go around the world for adventure. There are many awesome cities to visit in North America, so check out this list. I’d love to go back to Boston, Seattle, and New Orleans, and I’d love to visit Vancouver, Asheville, and Mexico City!

Win a Trip!
-Enter to win an 8-day trip to Ireland! Hotel, airfare, rental car, tours, and more included.
-Enter to win a 7-day trip to Italy! Hotel, airfare, wine-paired dinner and winery tours included.

Let’s Go to Cuba
U.S. airlines are fighting for flights to Cuba. U.S. and Cuban governments have agreed to 20 daily flights to Havana and 10 each to nine other cities. The airlines and cities will be announced by this summer. Starwood will be the first American hospitality company in Cuba in 50 years. There are about 4,000 Airbnb rentals available.
