This guide to the best North Austin restaurants is part of the Austin Food Blogger Alliance’s 2025 City Guide. #atxbesteats

People tend to visit restaurants and shops within a set radius of where they live. While I love visiting restaurants in Central and Downtown Austin, North Austin has its fair share of great restaurants too. There’s no need to go farther than you need to for good food! Here are my favorite and fan-favorite restaurants in North Austin.

Where is North Austin? My southern boundary is Anderson Lane and my other general boundaries are Wells Branch Parkway (north) and Lakeline Blvd. (west) and I-35 (east).

Visit San Antonio for the food! This post will share some of my restaurant recommendations.

I went to San Antonio for the food. It had a little bit to do with all the best things to do in San Antonio, but my to-try restaurant list was growing out of hand. The culinary scene is growing in San Antonio, like much of the city, and it’s an exciting time to experience it. If you want a weekend trip to a Texas foodie town, you should definitely consider San Antonio.

Here are my recommended San Antonio restaurants! (This post has recs from multiple trips to San Antonio, most recently in 2022.)

Cured

We stepped into the restaurant and discovered it was happy hour, which is always a great discovery! For happy hour, we enjoyed 50-cent fried quail legs and a discount on charcuterie. The fried quail legs were lightly fried and small nuggets of flavor. I almost wish we got more than two each! The charcuterie was a hit also. My favorite things on the board were the salmon rillette, smoked duck ham, and bresaola (dried, salted beef). The accompanying spreads and mustards on the board were perfect pairings.

Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery

While we were only able to try their in-between menu (a short menu available between lunch and dinner service), we really enjoyed our time at Southerleigh. The inside of the building is really cool because you can see the old building mixed with the new. You can try their many beers with a beer flight. Since they focus on flavors of the gulf, we snacked on fried snapper throats and raw oysters, both very tasty! We enjoyed a beer flight each, and my favorite beers were the Koalas, Cocker Spaniels & Unicorns (a cucumber Gose), Darwinian (IPA), and the Drop, Hop & Roll (a Pilsner).

Mixtli

As I mentioned, Mixtli was one of the big adventures we were looking forward to in San Antonio. To dine here, you must reserve and pre-pay your spot online. By serving 12 people every night they’re open, the restaurant is full every night, so get your tickets early if you want to try it. Every couple of weeks, the chefs focus on a different region of Mexico and create the menu around it. Paired drinks – alcoholic and not – are included with the price and they ranged from beer and red wine to tea.

Our menu was La Huasteca, featuring a region that is on the Gulf of Mexico. We enjoyed seven courses with variations of tamales, enchiladas, seafood, and beef. My favorite part of the impressive meal was dessert, of course! The lemon curd tart was perfectly cohesive and I loved the additional drops of coconut meringue, guava, and raspberry. All-in-all, Mixtli was a fun, intimate, and adventurous experience that I’d love to do again!

Mixtli San Antonio

Bakery Lorraine

This is the perfect breakfast spot and judging by the long line, many others agree! If you’re a lover of baked goods like me, you would probably like to know that this place was created by alumni of Bouchon Bakery. You’ll order at the counter, which will test your limits because you’ll be staring at a plethora of beautiful baked goods. We went with a kouign amann and some macarons. We also ordered the quiche du jour (with roasted red pepper and artichokes) and a sandwich with roasted red pepper, spinach, and poached egg. Everything was fresh, delightful, and filling. My favorites of the meal were the light quiche with flaky crust and the crispy and buttery kouign amann.

Bakery Lorraine Quiche
Bakery Lorraine Sandwich

La Fruteria

We made a quick stop here because we had spent the last hour outside and were parched! We enjoyed some agua frescas of two different flavors: strawberry lime and cantaloupe. They were a little sweeter than I expected. La Fruteria also has a wide selection of juice, smoothies, and Mexican food options.

La Fruteria San Antonio

Ocho

Ocho is the restaurant at Hotel Havana and swoon-worthy. The room is filled with light and impeccably color coordinated. I especially loved the tabletops. I indulged in the Cubano con Huevo which was an open-faced torta with Achiote roasted pork shoulder, griddled ham, swiss cheese, and pickles with a side of dressed home fries. It was a mess of deliciousness that begged not to be left on the plate.

Ocho at Havana San Antonio

Dough

When I went to San Antonio to run a half-marathon a few years ago, I re-fueled with Dough after the race. This restaurant makes wonderful Neapolitan pizza in wood-burning ovens and they have a variety of combinations. Sit at the bar to see the pizza-making “show.” You also need to try their burrata made in-house.

Dough San Antonio

Other suggestions on my to-eat list for next time:

  • Indy Coffee – If you like coffee, this shop comes recommended and the pretty interior is a plus.
  • Supper – Located at Pearl Brewery at Hotel Emma, this restaurant serves American fare and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I had a bite from this restaurant at an event in Austin and it was superb!
  • La Gloria – Another restaurant by Chef Johnny Hernandez (same as La Fruteria above), this Pearl Brewery restaurant features the wonders of interior Mexico.
  • Cullum’s Attagirl – Come here for the spicy fried chicken and cold beer!
  • South Alamode Panini & Gelato – The name says it all: panini sandwiches and gelato. Sounds like a delish combo to me!
  • Garcia’s Mexican Food Restaurant – This is a chef-recommended place for tacos and Mexican food.
  • Hot Joy – This restaurant is a dinner and late-night spot with Asian fusion food and drinks.
  • Freetail Brewing Company

Captivations is a monthly feature with links, stories and news that captivated me. Take a look at all the things captivating me lately.

Watching: Chef’s Table on Netflix
After hearing many recommendations for this Netflix original documentary show (see season 1 trailer here), I started watching Chef’s Table. It’s a lot of decadent and brilliant food shots, beautiful stories about chefs and restaurants and a look inside the brains of some of the world’s best chefs. There are two seasons with six episodes each and each episode is focused on a different chef. Five episodes in, they’ve featured chefs in Italy, New York, Argentina, Los Angeles and Australia. Seeing the different culture, style, journey and personality of each chef is fascinating and the show helps you understand the human relationship with food and the creative process of chefs. Have you watched it? Which is your favorite episode?

On Creativity
One of my favorite lines from Chef’s Table came in episode five from Ben Shewry, head chef at Attica in Melbourne, Australia: “There’s a romantic story that says people are just creative because that’s what they like to do, and they just go around all the time creating. Which is just kind of ridiculous in a way. Sometimes people have to create out of pure necessity. If I didn’t create stuff that was inspiring to people and that people didn’t like, we were going to go broke.”

Trying Clothes with Le Tote
I am not fashionable and definitely do not keep up with trends (hello closet of black and grey and white), but I like pretty and new clothes. My friend MJ sent me a free Le Tote box to try. I picked three clothing items and two accessories to borrow for the month. I have the choice to buy the things if I really love them or send them back for new items. Le Tote is a good option for those who like new and name brand clothing and accessories and have a budget of $50 a month to spend. A monthly habit is out of my budget but it’s fun to try on occasion. How awesome is the print of this off-shoulder dress and this popsicle clutch from my trial box!

What Podcasts Are You Listening To?
In true late bloomer form, I have finally discovered the joy of podcasts. I’ve listened to This American Life during road trips, but sitting down and paying attention to a podcast has been my crutch. I’m hoping to make it a habit when I’m getting ready in the morning and on my work commute. I’ve recently listed to a few episodes from some popular podcasts, including Real Talk Radio, The Jess Lively Show, and The Minimalists. What are your favorite podcasts?

Elena and Achim’s Love Story
I don’t think I’ve shared this before but if I have, here it is again! I follow Elena on Instagram and she started this love story illustration project last September. Daily posts show how she and her love came to be and as she writes in the story, this project was a way for her to evaluate and perhaps heal who they are now. Not only are the stories and illustrations so captivating but the thoughts in the story hit me deep.

How to Eat Clean
While I’ve never restricted myself to a certain diet, I’ve been trying to eat as clean as possible the last few years. From this article by A Sweet Pea Chef, “eating clean involves choosing whole foods, avoiding processed foods, and creating a healthy, conscientious approach to what foods you eat.” This means stepping away from packaged chips, frozen dinners, canned soups, etc. and stepping towards home-cooked, fresh vegetables and meat. My diet’s not perfect – I do enjoy fries and doughnuts occasionally – but I make a conscious effort to know what I’m putting into my body. Here are eight different things you can do to eat clean.

Gift Money Through Tendr
I found out about Tendr and it’s the classy and elegant money-receiving and money-giving tool you’ve been waiting for. If you’d rather receive money instead of physical gifts to celebrate your wedding, birthday or whatever occasion, you can set up a personalized occasion page on Tendr for free. If you’d like to give a monetary gift, you can choose a card and give your gift for $3. This would be great for a honeymoon fund if you don’t have a gift registry, baby fund for your second child, or alternative option if you’re a minimalist.

[EDIT: Very sad to say that as of July 7, 2016, Kin & Comfort has closed. Details here. Find other food recommendations here!]

One of my favorite Austin eats is Kin & Comfort, an unassuming Asian fusion restaurant inside the Hana World Market food court. The restaurant puts a spin on Thai and Southern cuisine. Their inventive and flavorful dishes and great value are what bring me back time after time.

Let’s jump into the dishes!

My new go-to appetizer is the Cabbage Slaw. In addition to cabbage, it also comes with pickled beets and their wonderful fried Brussel sprouts. If you’d rather not have the cabbage and beets, go with the side of Fried Brussel Sprouts.

Another good appetizer is the Krapao Pork Belly Bun with Asian pear and cilantro. One order comes with two juicy pork belly buns.

If you love meat and potatoes, you’ll love the Thai Meatloaf and Gravy. This hearty dish features a multitude of spices and the meatloaf sits on a bed of mashed potatoes.

Home Fried Chicken is another favorite and it comes with two chicken breasts and papaya salad at the spice level of your choosing. Crispy chicken skin, tender meat, and the spicy salad to complement those flavors.

If you love fried fish, you must try the Catfish Fries with pickled cabbage salad. The fish is lightly fried and pairs nicely with the fresh pickled cabbage salad. The dish comes with rice to even out the fried and pickled flavors.

The perfect example of their fusion cuisine lies in the Tom Kah Shrimp & Grits – my favorite dish on the menu. Traditional southern shrimp and grits are combined with Tom Kah soup – a traditional Thai sour and spicy soup with coconut milk. This dish is an explosion of delightful flavors!

As for value, every dish is $10 and less, and the dishes are a hearty portion. For two people, my boyfriend and I usually get very full on two dishes and one side, and our check comes out to less than $30 with tip. If you want to go to town, this is a great opportunity to invite your friends and have everyone order a different dish. Most of the dishes are easily shared. With plenty of seating in the food court area, this is a great place for communal dining.

Want fresh sushi in Austin? Try Tomodachi Austin.

While Austin’s newest restaurants get the majority of the buzz in the media, consistent Austin restaurants, like Tomodachi Austin, fly under the radar and have no problem filling their seats. And it’s not only warm bodies trying out the restaurant for the first time. It’s loyal patrons coming week after week to enjoy fresh sushi, an enthusiastic atmosphere and the talents of their favorite sushi chefs.

King Salmon with Truffle Oil
King Salmon with Truffle Oil

The dishes steal the show. Chef Steve is talented and creative, and he’s taught his chef team very well. They bring a fire to your table with the Volcano roll or let you be the chef with the hot rock. You can find tasty rolls like the Ex-Girlfriend and typical dishes like edamame or tonkatsu on their menu. My go-to dishes aren’t necessarily on the menu the servers put in front of you but the ones displayed on small chalkboards on the wall behind the sushi bar. It’s a list of the day’s fish offerings. Pick the fish you want and your waitress and the sushi chefs know what to do. Their fish selection is one of the freshest in town, and I love the variety of fish too. We’ve found that you get the most inventive and interesting dishes when you let them do what they do best.

If you’d like to order from the menu, try:

  • Nobu New Style Sashimi: sashimi dressed with garlic yuzu soy, ginger, chives
  • Yellowtail Sashimi
  • Tomoviche: very light with citrus, sea salt, cilantro, and sriracha; great with Japa Tai/Snapper fish
  • Quail Egg Shooter
  • Spicy Edamame
  • Cucumber Sake

As for the service, seeing the same faces over several years is evidence to how much the team enjoys their jobs. They’re always friendly and welcoming, even when it’s a full night and they’re running around to keep up. I appreciate their eagerness to recommend dishes to try, and they rarely steer us wrong.

Since the restaurant doesn’t do reservations, weekend nights around 7 p.m. can easily have you waiting for 30-60 minutes, especially if your party is larger than two. Try arriving earlier or be prepared to wait. If you want the best seat in the house, sit at the sushi bar! You’ll be able to watch the chefs craft the dishes and get more insight about sushi.

Best Restaurants in Charleston

One of the main reasons my friend Sarah and I picked Charleston for our girls’ trip was because of the food. We heard it was a foodie hotspot and after eating at some of the best restaurants in Charleston, we found it to be true! We thoroughly researched and made reservations before our trip to create a trip schedule. I’ve included restaurant hours, reservation information, and tips to help make your dining experience in Charleston extra tasty!

Sugar Bakeshop
Following my tradition of eating cupcakes when I travel, I found Sugar Bakeshop was one of the most popular places in Charleston. We split this scrumptious Vanilla Blueberry Cupcake with Lemon Curd filling. If you’re not into cupcakes, they also make cookies, tarts, and pies.

Offering: sweet treats for anytime
Hours: Mon-Fri 10 am to 6 pm; Sat 11 am to 5 pm
Address: 59 Cannon St, Charleston, SC 29403

Sugar Bakeshop Charleston

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams
While Jeni’s is not homegrown in Charleston, it’s a delightful treat when you’re walking around downtown. The cute shop smells of waffle cones and their ice cream flavors will have you salivating. I enjoyed the brown butter almond brittle and salted peanut butter with chocolate flecks. The good thing is you don’t need to go to Charleston to try it; buy it in a grocery store near you or online.

Offering: sweet treats for anytime
Hours: Noon to 11 pm daily
Address: 501 King St, Charleston, SC 29403

WildFlour Pastry
We needed to grab a snack for the airport (it started as an excuse to visit but it ended up being truth), so we stopped by here after breakfast. We grabbed quiches, lemon cake, and a cupcake. These were all happily enjoyed as we made our way home. My favorite thing was the mushroom and gruyere quiche! I hear their sticky buns are amazing but those are only offered on Sunday morning and sell out quickly, so plan accordingly.

Offering: One menu for breakfast, lunch and snacks
Hours: Tues-Fri 6:30 am to 4:30 pm; Sat 8 am to 3 pm; Sun 8 am to 1 pm; Closed Mon.
Address: 73 Spring St, Charleston, SC 29403

FIG
Our first dinner was at the popular restaurant FIG. Its dark restaurant was intimate and casual. The service was outstanding. We split some amazing dishes: Ricotta Gnocchi and Grass-Fed Beef Bolognese (my favorite of the night), Golden Tilefish, Suckling Pig Confit and Sticky Sorghum Cake. The decadent, soft pillows of ricotta gnocchi were so good, I slowed myself down to savor every single bite of the dish. Though it will put a larger dent in your wallet than other restaurants, it’s definitely a worthy place to try!

Offering: Dinner
Reservation Tip: Reservations can be made a month (exactly) in advance, and plan accordingly because those reservations are snatched up quickly.
Hours: Mon-Thurs 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm; Fri-Sat 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm; Closed Sun
Address: 232 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29401

Butcher & Bee
After looking at the menu, we knew we had to fit this simple spot into our schedule. We enjoyed the kale slaw, crispy Brussels sprouts, double burger and fries and turkey hash. The juicy burger and the kale slaw were my favorites at Butcher & Bee! Their menu is fairly short and the daily menu is posted on their Facebook page.

Offering: Lunch, Weekend Brunch, Late Night
Reservation Tip: No reservations since it is counter service.
Hours: Mon-Fri 11 am to 3 pm; Sat-Sun 10 am to 3 pm; Fri-Sat 10 pm – 3 am
Address: 654 King St, Charleston, SC 29403

Butcher and Bee Charleston

Butcher and Bee Charleston Best Restaurants

The Daily
Butcher & Bee’s sister shop next door, The Daily is a coffee shop and quick snack store. We made a stop here after eating at Butcher & Bee and got some buttermilk muffin donuts to go. They are the perfect sweet snack dipped in sugar and only $1.10 each.

Offering: Coffee, cold-pressed juice, breakfast sandwiches, pastries, grab-and-go items
Hours: 7am-7pm Mon-Fri; 8am-7pm Sat; 8am-4pm Sun
Address: 652 B. King Street, Charleston, SC 29403

Rooftop at The Vendue
This hotel has a hot spot rooftop bar and restaurant that gives you some of the best views of Charleston. We enjoyed some cocktails here as the sun set. They have live music every Sunday from 2-5pm. That view!

Offering: Lunch, Dinner and Drinks; Live music every Sunday from 2-5pm
Reservation Tip: Does not take reservations
Hours: 11:30am–10pm Sun-Thurs; 11:30am-12am Fri-Sat
Address: 19 Vendue Range, Charleston, SC 29401

Husk
This was another fantastic dinner spot during our trip. Led by James Beard Award-winning Chef Sean Brock, Husk focuses on the bounty of Southern ingredients, working closely with local farms. You’ll see the ingredients and its origins listed on their website and prominently in the lobby of the restaurant. When we were there, we enjoyed Cheddar Pimento Cheese and Hoe cakes; Country ham with buttermilk biscuits, mustard and bread-n-butter pickles; slow cooked pork ribs with puffed pork skins; and Cornmeal-dusted catfish with shrimp rice, roasted fennel and mustard greens. If I had to pick a favorite dish, it would be the Cheddar Pimento Cheese. Every dish was exceptional, the service was pleasant and attentive, and the environment was casual yet special.

Offering: Lunch, Sunday Brunch, Dinner
Reservation Tip: Advance reservations are very necessary if you want to eat here. We made our reservation about a month in advance.
Hours: Mon-Sat 11:30 am-2:30 pm; Sun 10 am-2:30 pm; Sun-Thurs 5:30-10 pm; Fri-Sat 5:30-11 pm
Address: 76 Queen St, Charleston, SC 29401

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit
This spot was not on our food schedule but we passed by it several times when walking along King Street. After smelling the biscuits from outside and seeing many people taking orders to-go, we knew we had to make room somehow. We made it for breakfast and it was such a good idea! I enjoyed the biscuit sandwich with sausage, fried egg and pimento cheese. It was messy, flavorful and filling.

Offering: One menu for breakfast and lunch
Reservation Tip: No reservations since it is counter service
Hours: 8 am – 2pm daily
Address: 476 King St, Charleston, SC 29403

Xiao Bao Biscuit
This Thai restaurant is a favorite among visitors and locals. The unassuming, casual eatery was a happening place on a Monday, and we managed to get two seats at the bar without waiting. The menu is short, sweet and truly authentic. Sarah had been craving a papaya salad of the same caliber of those she enjoyed in Thailand last year and this one, the Som Tum with Chicken (black bean fried chicken over rice and papaya salad) satisfied the craving. My dish, the Pad Kra Pow (minced beef, beans, Thai chili, basil, rice and egg), was so tasty and fresh.

Offering: Lunch and Dinner
Reservation Tip: Does not take reservations.
Hours: Mon- Sat 11:30 am- 2 pm; Mon- Sat 5:30 – 10 pm
Address: 224 Rutledge Ave, Charleston, SC 29401

167 Raw
This 18-seat restaurant will make you wait but it’s worth it! On a Monday night around 6:30pm, it was about a 15-minute wait. We started with ahi poke, which came with chips. I enjoyed three freshly shucked oysters and the fish taco. Sarah enjoyed the incredible lobster roll. If you love seafood, this is the spot!

Offering: Lunch and Dinner
Reservation Tip: Does not take reservations
Hours: Mon-Thu 11 am-9 pm; Fri-Sat 11 am-10 pm
Address: 289 E Bay St, Charleston, SC 29401

Hominy Grill
For our last meal in Charleston, we decided we needed a traditional Southern meal. Hominy Grill satisfied our taste buds. We split the Charleston Nasty Biscuit (chicken biscuit sandwich covered in gravy) and the shrimp and grits. I’ve eaten a handful of shrimp and grits in my life and I can easily say this one was my favorite!

Offering: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Weekend Brunch
Reservation Tip: Does not take reservations
Hours: Mon-Fri 7:30 am–9 pm; Sat 9 am-9pm; Sun 9 am-3 pm
Address: 207 Rutledge Ave, Charleston, SC 29403

We had many restaurants on our list after our research but weren’t able to visit all of them. Here are some more noteworthy options I’d recommend checking out:

  • Edmund’s Oast: This gastropub is the place for craft beers and cocktails. It’s located far north.
  • Bay Street Biergarten: This cute biergarten would be a perfect chill spot during nice weather.
  • Wild Olive Restaurant: Located on Johns Island, this “rustic chic” restaurant will satisfy your need for Italian food and quality wine.
  • McCrady’s: You’ll find Southern fine dining at McCrady’s, located in the French Quarter. Chef Sean Brock of Husk is also the chef here. It was opened in 1778 as a tavern.
  • Two Boroughs Larder: We had been looking at this spot for weekend brunch, but they also serve dinner and happy hour. It’s focus is on seasonal American dishes and noteworthy wines and beers.
  • The Ordinary: This not-so-ordinary restaurant was a James Beard finalist in 2013 and a place to indulge in seafood. You’ll find an oyster bar and grilled fish dishes here.
  • Indaco: Indaco (the Italian word for indigo) is an Italian restaurant in downtown Charleston. At this finer dining restaurant, you’ll enjoy pizzas, pastas, and cured sausages.
  • The Grocery: Known as warm and welcoming, The Grocery focuses on a seasonal menu for weekend brunch or dinner. You’ll find mostly American-style dishes with ingredients from local purveyors.
  • Palmetto Brewing Co: In looking at Charleston’s breweries, this one seemed to be noteworthy and popular.
  • Westbrook Brewing: I enjoyed two of Westbrook Brewing’s beers (White Thai and One Claw) in Charleston and their brewery (outside of downtown) would be fun to visit for a tour.
  • Proof: This craft cocktail, beer and wine bar is a cozy speakeasy to relax in.

There is no shortage – thankfully – of mouth-watering barbecue in Austin. Stiles Switch stands out in my mind as some of the best barbecue this city has to offer.

Stiles Switch BBQ Austin Barbecue

Austin’s culinary boom brought many talented individuals to this city and encouraged them to share their craft. Pitmaster Lance Kirkpatrick spent many years at Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor. In 2011, entrepreneur Shane Stiles brought him on to open Stiles Switch and the rest is delicious history.

Stiles Switch is one of those restaurants where you lose count of how many times you’ve been but you’re excited to eat there every time. The food is consistent, the barbecue sauce is flavorful, and the food is easily accessible. I’m not above waiting in lines for hours, especially when it’s worth it, but when you simply want to meet up a friend for lunch or pop in for dinner, the lack of extreme planning and waiting is refreshing. The counter service makes the experience quicker.

Stiles Switch Barbecue

Of course, it’s all about the meat. Ask for the moist/fatty brisket and you will get meat that melts in your mouth. Ask for beef ribs and the tenderness will fall off the bone. They also do pork spare ribs, turkey breast, pork loin and sausage. I usually order the two meat plate that also includes your choice of two sides. You can also do it a la carte by ordering by the half pound or a sandwich.

Stiles Switch Barbecue Austin

While meat is the star of the plate, its supporting sides deserve some love also. My go-to is the potato salad, and I’ve also enjoyed the cucumber tomato salad, mac and cheese and green bean salad. And yes, brew goes well with barbecue. If you think you can make it to dessert, you’ll have to try the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream or banana pudding.

Stiles Switch BBQ

Party people – you should know that Stiles Switch has a private room and does catering for all your entertaining needs.

For those new to Stiles Switch, it may be worth mentioning that the shopping center Stiles Switch is in is the origin of actor Matthew McConaughey’s Hollywood debut, the pool hall in ‘Dazed and Confused.’ Alright, alright, alright.

Austin Barbecue Stiles Switch BBQ

For visitors wanting a taste of Austin barbecue, for a person wanting to impress a date, or friends wanting to enjoy a tasty barbecue get-together, Stiles Switch is my recommendation!

This month was filled with good eats during the holiday season. What you won’t see below is lots of homemade eats at holiday parties and family gatherings. Here are the fantastic flavors I enjoyed in December.

All the cake at Cake Party
There were so many sweet and savory things at the cake potluck I threw at the beginning of the month.

Cake PartyCustomized Pizza at Mod Pizza
This pizza chain is similar to Subway or Freebirds where you pick all the toppings on your pizza or you can use their recommended combos. My little and I loaded up our pizzas with our favorite toppings and really enjoyed the end result!

Mod PizzaCookies from Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap
I received three tasty packages of cookies from three other participating bloggers. Click for the recipes: Brown Butter Eggnog Cookies by Cooking and Beer, Chewy Gingerbread Cookies by The Blond Cook, and Oatmeal Raisin White Chocolate Bars by D Grubs.

cookie swapLunch at Swift’s Attic
To celebrate my birthday, my co-workers and I enjoyed a 5-star lunch at Swift’s Attic. I enjoyed the blistered shishitos, devils on horseback (cheese and fig wrapped in bacon), squid fries, extra juicy burger, and popcorn and a movie dessert.

Swift's Attic Appetizers

Swift's Attic Burger

Swift's Attic DessertDonuts at Voodoo Doughnut
The doughnut craze continues! Voodoo Doughnut, a Portland original, has made it to Texas with the opening of this Austin location. The Captain my Captain doughnut and sprinkle doughnut are sweet and colorful.

Voodoo DoughnutKettle Corn Ice Cream at SPUN Ice Cream
After I tried SPUN Ice Cream’s liquid nitrogen creation at SXSW, I had a feeling that this interesting concept would be a fun addition to the Austin culinary scene. It is finally open on east 7th. I enjoyed the kettle corn ice cream with a salted chocolate shell. Go check it out and see the process in person.

Spun Ice CreamCarrot cupcake and Strawberry cupcake at Smallcakes (Dallas)
I enjoyed so many good eats in Dallas, including cupcakes from Smallcakes. Located in the Mockingbird shopping center, Smallcakes is a good snack mid-shopping. And with locations all over the U.S., even you can try it wherever you live!

Smallcakes DallasVanilla Cupcake at Reverie Bakeshop (Dallas)
This vegan and gluten-free bakery is a gem in my hometown of Richardson. Their menu includes cupcakes and a variety of pastries and desserts such as donuts, kolaches, cookies, and ice cream. I tried the vanilla cupcake with vanilla icing and while I could tell that it was vegan and gluten-free because of it’s density and flavors, I thought it tasted good. I can’t wait to make regular visits whenever I’m in Dallas!

Reverie Bakeshop DallasNYE Dinner at Bullfight
Yep, back at Bullfight after the November visit. It was similar experience taste-wise, good but not spectacular. The Roasted Mushrooms dish was again the favorite dish of the night. We also enjoyed the Jamon Iberico 24 months, Veal Sweetbreads, Seafood Paella, Grilled Prawns, Urchin Roe, and Tomato Gazpacho. While our foodie group had high expectations, it was still a great time with great friends with LOTS to celebrate!

My November was FULL of great flavors. My month included home-cooked meals, dinner parties, Shabu, new restaurant Bullfight, multiple eats in Dallas, and my favorite Wine and Swine event.

Breakfast at CBD Provisions (Dallas)
After staying in town for a Dallas Cowboys game, we ventured to downtown Dallas for breakfast. Their weekday breakfast selection wasn’t as good as their weekend brunch but it was our best option and it was very tasty!

CBD Provisions Dallas Breakfast

Homemade Sweet Potato Hash
This has become my boyfriend’s signature homemade breakfast dish and I love it! Sweet potatoes are roasted with rosemary and then cooked with kale, bacon, garlic and onions. Finally, eggs are cracked on top and it’s baked in the oven. Hearty, healthy and delicious!

Homemade Sweet Potato Hash

Bites at Wine and Swine
Austin Food & Wine Alliance’s annual Wine and Swine event is consistently my favorite annual Austin culinary event. The weather is usually perfect and the food can’t be beat. My favorite dishes this year were the pastrami bun from Olamaie (that ended up winning the award), the pulled pork torta from Franklin Barbecue, cassata gelato in a tiny lard pastry crust from Dolce Neve, and smoked Hawaiian pork roll from Launderette.

Wine and Swine 2015

Hot Pot at Shabu
Craving warmth on a cold night, we found it at Shabu. We had a spread of shrimp, quail eggs, beef slices, two kinds of mushrooms, and Chinese lettuce.

Shabu Hot Pot

Homemade Pecan Pie
I made this pecan pie for my work Thanksgiving potluck. It was a hit!

Homemade Pecan Pie

Crabsgiving
Following up our Seafood Boil, we had the equipment for a few more weeks before we had to give it back, so why not another? This time, in addition to shrimp and snow crab, we got king crab. I would NOT want to encounter one of those things in real life! The legs were long and sharp. Our friends braved the cold with us and we enjoyed our fill of seafood.Crabsgiving

Homemade Chicken in Spicy Red Pepper, Tomato and Mushroom Sauce
When I crave a certain dish, I consult the internet to find a trustworthy recipe. When my boyfriend craves a certain dish, he buys all the ingredients he thinks goes in it and wings it. It’s a great talent to have (especially if you simply reap the benefits like me), and this dish turned out SO GOOD. It’s got spicy red peppers, diced tomatoes, mushrooms, white wine, chicken, garlic, yellow onions and a bunch of spices. Served on top of brown rice and with a side of homemade black beans, this dish will hopefully become a staple!

Homemade Chicken

Chinese Thanksgiving Feast
My dad and cousin put a big effort into our Thanksgiving meal this year and it was so good! Lobster, crab and crab fried rice, mushrooms, steamed fish, jellyfish, turkey and Chinese broccoli. We all had full bellies by the end of the night.

Chinese Thanksgiving

Gyro Plate at Prince Lebanese Grill (Dallas/Arlington)
Boyfriend and I went to visit his sweet grandma in Arlington during Thanksgiving, and we found a highly rated restaurant in the area. She had never had Lebanese food, and it was so cute hearing her say, “well, I tried a new kind of food today!” We learned when we sat down that the restaurant’s claim to fame was their appearance on Food Network years ago. We started with their popular appetizer plate with hummus, babaganoush, tabouli, and dolmas. Boyfriend had the spicy chicken shwarma that was tasty and I really enjoyed my gyro plate with meat, rice, pita and greek salad. If you’re ever in the area, give this place a visit!

Prince Lebanese Grill Kale and Avocado Dip, Matcha Horchata, and Quinoa Burger at True Food Kitchen (Dallas)
True Food Kitchen is an aesthetically cute and trendy restaurant in Dallas’ Preston Center and there are locations around the U.S. Their menu is focused on anti-inflammatory and seasonal foods. We started with the kale and avocado dip, which was very similar to guacamole. I loved my matcha horchata, made with almond milk, and my quinoa “burger” had a little too much quinoa but I enjoyed the flavor combination of quinoa, hummus, tzatziki, tomato, cucumber, red onion, avocado and feta. I’m looking forward to the Austin location coming soon!

Dinner at NoRTH
The situation: way past dinner time at 9pm and all the new restaurants you want to go to are too far south. Thank goodness for the restaurants at the Domain! My favorite dishes of the night were the Grilled Cauliflower with fried egg and baby asparagus and the bolognese pasta dish. Dinner was delightfully paired with a stellar Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dinner at Bullfight
I was excited to try Bullfight for my birthday dinner. The overall experience was good but not great. The marinated octopus dish was very tender but over-seasoned. The grilled quail and tomato gazpacho were good but not impressive. I didn’t enjoy the crab on toast. My favorite dishes were the mushrooms with a jamon cured egg and the diver scallops. For dessert, the Crema Catalana (creme brûlée) was really good. The Tempranillo and Monastrell red wines (by the glass) were very compatible with the food. Wanting to re-live some of my amazing eats in Spain, I may have had too high of expectations for traditional Spanish eats, but Bullfight has a lot of potential to become a favorite. I’m looking forward to returning with friends next month to try the jamon! Side note: If you’re looking for Spanish tapas and traditional dishes, Barlata is the closest I’ve found in Austin. Bullfight is more of a fusion restaurant.

What mind-boggling things have you been eating this month? Have you tried any new restaurants lately?
