This guide to the best North Austin restaurants is part of the Austin Food Blogger Alliance’s 2025 City Guide. #atxbesteats

People tend to visit restaurants and shops within a set radius of where they live. While I love visiting restaurants in Central and Downtown Austin, North Austin has its fair share of great restaurants too. There’s no need to go farther than you need to for good food! Here are my favorite and fan-favorite restaurants in North Austin.

Where is North Austin? My southern boundary is Anderson Lane and my other general boundaries are Wells Branch Parkway (north) and Lakeline Blvd. (west) and I-35 (east).

Austin restaurants and dishes are featured in my monthly Flavors of the Month posts. Check out this post for recommendations!

We survived the seemingly unhealthiest month of the year! If you put your mind to it and try to avoid all the sweets, it’s possible to do, and I escaped this month mostly unscathed. This month I was trying to cook as many Smitten Kitchen Every Day recipes as possible to finish the challenge, but we had plenty of other good eats!

Lunch at Darna (Complimentary)
Darna, a new-ish Moroccan and Mediterranean restaurant, invited us in to try their menu, and it was delightful! The appetizers might have been my favorite – Moroccan olives, regular hummus, roasted red pepper hummus, and zaalouk, which is an eggplant and tomato mix like babaganoush.

We also enjoyed the kofta tangine, which is beef and lamb meatballs marinated in sauce, and a chicken tangine, which is chicken marinated with Moroccan spices. We finished this off with Moroccan cookies and baklava. What a delicious feast!

Austin Food Bloggers Alliance at Wild Chix & Waffles (Complimentary)
Our blogger group had our holiday party at Wild Chix & Waffles. This restaurant recently re-opened as a completely gluten-free restaurant, and their offerings are noteworthy! Their sangria is tasty. Be sure to get the guacamole with yucca chips, Aloha Beaches (poke) salad, Black Angus Beef Burger, and Gone Bananas (waffle with bananas and Nutella) for dessert.

Dinner at Le Bleu
I met up with a friend visiting from out of town for Vietnamese food at Le Bleu. This is the brick-and-mortar shop from the food trailer Saigon Le Vendeur. We tried the OG banh mi, grilled pork bun, and a side of brussels sprouts. I was surprised to find it more expensive than I expected but maybe I’m too comfortable with the low cost of other mom-and-pop Vietnamese restaurants. It reminds me of the question from the show Ugly Delicious about why Asian food is so cheap.

Tacos at Bohemian Barbecue at Trail of Lights (Complimentary)
The Austin Food Bloggers Alliance was invited to experience Trail of Lights and its food trucks. I loved these brisket tacos from Bohemian Barbecue. They typically only do events in Austin, so if you need a caterer, check them out.

Happy Hour at Mongers
One of the best happy hours in town, Mongers has a solid seafood offering. One day, I’ll go and order “normal” food, but their specials are perfect for sharing. Pictured: tuna tacos, oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp, crab fingers.

Beer at Whichcraft Taproom (Complimentary)
My friend Caitlin of Big World, Small Girl invited me to a beer history class at Whichcraft. We learned so much about women’s accomplishments in the history of beer. I’m pretty sure beer would not be where it is today without female influence, and I’m glad our influence continues to propel the industry forward. I tried the Greetings from Brenham IPA from Brazos Brewing, and I was a big fan!

Lunch at Colleen’s Kitchen (Complimentary)
After our beer history class, we walked over to Colleen’s Kitchen for a southern meal paired with Jameson cocktails. We enjoyed fried green tomatoes, bacon-wrapped dates, deviled eggs, a cheese board, a variety of biscuits, and a cherry brownie for dessert. My favorite cocktail was the Merry Berry Punch with Jameson Black Barrel, Cranberry, Gingery Beer, Lemon, and Rosemary. I would go back for a fried chicken biscuit!

Ice Cream at Gati
I spotted this new coconut ice cream food truck while I was out and about and had to stop and try it. I got the cookies and cream flavor and found it to be very coconut forward, so it wasn’t my favorite, but maybe the coconut is toned down in the other flavors?

Homemade Persimmon Bread
My parents have a persimmon tree, so they’re always giving them away by the bag full in the fall. To use them up, I tried persimmon bread, which was not too bad!

Matcha and Breakfast at Tribal (Dallas)
Fiancé and I went to Dallas to see my family for Christmas and we were there for a few days. To get some work done and to find some healthy eats, fiancé and I ventured to a coffee shop. The matcha lattes were so good, I kept sneaking sips of his instead of my chai latte. I also had the breakfast tacos, which comes with soft scrambled eggs, beets, and sweet potatoes. His lox bagel was also very good.

New Year’s Eve Dinner
For New Year’s Eve, my friends and I hosted a low-key potluck. We had a fancy cheese plate, baked cheese pastries, prime rib, hasselback potatoes, salads, green bean casserole, and plenty of dessert.

What was your favorite thing you ate in December?

Trail of Lights is one of Austin’s favorite holiday traditions!

I’ve been to the Trail of Lights a few times in my years of living in Austin but I hadn’t been in three or four years. I can confirm that it is still a lot of fun, especially for families. Austin Food Blogger Alliance was invited for a complimentary experience of the trail and its food trucks.

The trail features light tunnels, festive displays with familiar characters, shopping booths, live music, and dance performances, and even Santa. You’ll easily spend an hour here or maybe three.

Can you believe the first Trail of Lights event happened in 1965? As you can imagine, the displays and number of lights have expanded since then. It’s beautiful to see the Austin skyline in the background.

I love the ferris wheel and carousel!

They also have fun events like cocktail and crafting workshops and a movie night. Don’t forget to stop at the tree!

Food and Drink at Trail of Lights

There are four different areas around the trail for food vendors, and the nearly 30 choices range from tacos to pizza. Plus there are plenty of dessert items like kettle corn and funnel cake.

We got to try food from a few of the food trucks. Don’t miss the brisket tacos at Bohemian Barbecue located at Candy Cane Lane. Stop at Shawarma Point at the North Pole for loaded curly fries. Another favorite is grilled cheese sandwiches at Burro Cheese Kitchen. See the full line-up of full vendors here.

Getting to Trail of Lights and Parking

They have two official parking lots close to Zilker Park. Parking passes must be purchased in advance online and it is $15 per car.

The $6 shuttle includes your general admission ticket. It runs continuously from Republic Square Park in Downtown Austin or Toney Burger Event Center in South Austin.

The best way for you or your rideshare to get to Trail of Lights is by Mopac and not Lamar. They close off Barton Springs Road nightly, so expect a lot of traffic in the area around Barton Springs Rd and Lamar Blvd.

Quick Info

  • Get there 15 minutes before it opens or right as it opens if you want to avoid crowds. There’s also a Zip pass that allows you to get in at 6 p.m.
  • Zip Passes are $15-20, depending on the day you go, and include early entry, separate entrance and access to the Zilker Lounge where there’s cookies, cocoa, seating, and nicer bathrooms.
  • Trail of Lights is free seven out of the 14 days it’s open. Otherwise, general admission is $3 per person. Tickets can be bought in advance and this will allow you to get in through a separate line.
  • Seating is available near the food trucks and bar tents.
  • Trail of Lights is usually open through two weekends in December, this year from December 10-23, 2018.
  • Find more info on their website.

SRSLY chocolate is a chocolate maker in Austin, TX. I’m sharing all about why I love the chocolate and have my pantry stocked!

SRSLY chocolate

Last year, I was introduced to the world of craft chocolate through a book called Bean-to-Bar Chocolate. A few months later, it got very real when we ended up touring a cacao farm and making chocolate by hand in Belize. Learning about the chocolate-making process and what’s going on in the craft chocolate industry encouraged me to buy a bunch of chocolate to taste. Of course, I had to try Austin’s local chocolate maker SRSLY chocolate, and I’ve been buying their products ever since!

I was very excited when SRSLY chocolate invited our Austin Food Bloggers Alliance group to tour their factory and store in historic downtown Taylor. We learned so much about the company and chocolate-making. In fact, we even got to customize our own chocolate bars! But wait, I’m getting ahead of myself, so more on that later.

All About SRSLY chocolate

Bob Williamson is a foodie at his core. From working as a cheese maker to baking pastries, he was frequently drawn to combining his love of food with his creative energy as a maker. He decided to make chocolate from scratch for a croissant and that curiosity and dedication began a new journey that has led to SRSLY chocolate.

That might sound like the magic happened overnight, but as with anything that’s worthwhile, it hasn’t been easy or fast. The craft chocolate world is new and small, so it took a lot of researching, testing, creating tools, and building a network of chocolate-making friends to get where they are today.

SRSLY chocolate

SRSLY chocolate enjoys bringing other makers into the mix. They’ve collaborated with Third Coast Coffee, HiFi Mycology, Two Hives Honey, Miche Bread, and Barton Springs Mill. They also provide their chocolate as an ingredient for local vendors to use in their products. For example, you can find SRSLY chocolate in a few of Lick Honest Ice Cream’s flavors.

In addition to providing their chocolate as an ingredient and selling their chocolate at Austin farmers markets and local stores, Bob and his artistic wife Robin opened up their beautiful Taylor shop a few months ago. With an educational panel on one wall, the delicious chocolate bar wall, and rope decor in the window, the shop has a beautiful and welcoming aesthetic.

Six years after the first attempt at making chocolate, SRSLY chocolate has come a long way and continues to innovate.

Touring SRSLY chocolate and Making Chocolate

The first thing you’ll notice when you step inside the SRSLY chocolate factory and shop is the sweet smell of chocolate. It automatically puts a smile on your face.

We headed behind the shop wall to see where all the magic happens. SRSLY chocolate bars are wrapped in a printed cardstock like a puzzle or origami. These sheets are die-cut by hand and individually wrapped around the foil-wrapped chocolate.

Bob shared all about the bean-to-bar process. We got to see the huge bags of beans and the difference between beans of two countries. (As I mention in the bean-to-bar chocolate post, beans have specific tastes that come from the land of the country.) After the beans arrive, Bob takes them to Third Coast Coffee, a local coffee roaster, to roast them. The cacao shells are then removed and the beans go into the stone mill to be ground into liquid. You can imagine this whole process similar to how peanuts become peanut butter.

The chocolate is then moved into another machine to be tempered, which makes it look smoother and the fats even.

After that, the chocolate is poured into molds and inclusions are added. We had a lot of fun customizing our own bars. What do you think?

A quick note about the difference between chocolate makers and chocolatiers. Chocolate makers take cacao beans and turn them into chocolate. Chocolatiers take chocolate and turn them into confections like truffles.

SRSLY chocolate’s New Bon Bon Program

Now, SRSLY chocolate is taking it another step and going from bean to bonbon! Not only are they creating the chocolate that goes into a confection but they are starting to create their own confections.

SRSLY chocolate partners with Texas purveyors to provide ingredients for their bonbons. For example, the pear bonbon features Confituras jam and the dewberry bonbon features berries from a farm in Cameron, TX. I got a taste of these two flavors and they are so delicious! They have four additional flavors: peach, coffee ganache, vanilla mesquite, and Texas pecan chocolate praline.

Conclusion

The easiest way to learn about SRSLY chocolate flavors and buy products is on their website. Plus, you can always get a taste at their retail store or at the farmers market. I love the Sea Salt & Almond, 84% Oko Caribe, Peppermint, and Dirty White. Texas Mesquite is a new flavor to showcase the local mesquite tree pods. They’re always working on new flavors so follow them on Instagram for updates.

I’m a craft chocolate fanatic and as you can see, there’s a lot to be excited about! Supporting craft chocolate makers like SRSLY chocolate means you’re enjoying a high-quality product and providing for cacao farmers and their families instead of supporting slave labor and unfair wages. SRSLY chocolate is seriously good (you’ve been waiting for that this whole post, right? 😀 ), so give it a taste!

Flavors of the Month is a monthly feature of some of the dishes and restaurants I enjoyed. Check out this post for restaurant and menu recommendations!

Dinner at Sway at The Domain
We were excited to visit Sway at Rock Rose at The Domain. We’ve been waiting for the restaurant to open since it was announced. Same design and feel as its original location on South 1st. We got the whole fried fish, though we were a little disappointed that it wasn’t as crispy as we’d like. We liked the soft-shell crab. It’s been a while since I got the Thai tea affogato and it did not disappoint! It’s easily one of my favorite desserts in town.

Brunch at First Watch
This chain restaurant recently opened a handful of locations in the Austin area, taking over locations of The Egg and I. We shared an eggs benedict and French toast, both solid!

Homemade Tacos
Enthusiasm for my cookbook challenge has simmered considerably but we’re still cooking most of our dinners at home. These were simple street-taco-style tacos with beef, onion, cilantro, lime, and salsa on corn tortillas.

Totchos at PDQ (Complimentary)
Top fried potato things with anything and I’m down! PDQ invited me in to try their new totchos and even though they gave me a complimentary meal, I almost licked the plate. The tater tots are topped with bacon, Fritos, scallions, queso, and ranch. I also tried their Thai chicken rice bowl, which was great also.

Craft Beer and Snacks at The Brewtorium
Propeller Head IPA was a good one at The Brewtorium and I’m glad I visited this place! I love their big, open space, and I bet it will be a happening place this summer. If you visit, come hungry because they’ve got a good menu too. We tried the pretzel with beer cheese along with their potato pot-stickers and brat pot-stickers. I’m definitely coming back for pizza and more beer!

Happy Hour at Academia (Complimentary)
Academia invited me in to check out their new bar on 4th Street. School-themed décor, including a file folder menu, are throughout the place. They have a strong cocktail program and with $5 happy hour drinks, who wouldn’t be a fan? Be sure to get the crab cakes!

Dinner at Julie’s Noodles
When Boyfriend suggests eating noodles, I TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT! We went to Julie’s Noodles for soup dumplings, pan-fried dumplings, and noodle soup. Surprisingly, the beef burrito, which was beef wrapped in a scallion pancake was the best thing we ate.

Lunch at Noon
Have y’all visited the newly branded Noon yet? (It used to be Verts.) It’s like a Subway or Chipotle but with Mediterranean food. I like the concept but I’ve gone twice and both times some of my food was too salty. My dining mates liked it though so it was either my dish or my taste buds.

Brunch at Le Politique
I came here for the pastries! Added this delicious kouign amann to my blog list. My eggs benedict was all right. Have you eaten here for dinner? What’s your favorite dish here? I want to like this restaurant because the design is great but I’ll likely only pop into their bakery and grab some pastries to go.

Iced Chai at Merit Coffee
This coffee shop at Seaholm is from San Antonio and their location makes it a happening place. Janna and I sipped drinks outside and waited out a passing thunderstorm. My iced chai was good!

Austin Food Bloggers Alliance Happy Hour (Complimentary)
It’s been a while since I attended a happy hour! We have an awesome food bloggers group in Austin and we have monthly happy hours sponsored by restaurants and/or brands. This month, Lantana Hummus hosted us in their beautiful space and invited Rays Spirits, Mighty Swell, and Siete Foods to join us. It was a lovely evening outside and we got to try all the goodies. We even got to be a part of their user testing for their NEW line of fruit hummus coming out this fall!

Other Food Stuff

  • Austin Chronicle released their First Plates awards of the year. This honors the best restaurants in town.
  • James Beard Awards for 2018 were announced.
  • Coming soon to the blog are my recommendations for what to eat and drink in Mexico City! Stay tuned.

What’s one thing (food/restaurant) I should try this month?

Flavors of the Month is a monthly feature of some of the best dishes and restaurants I enjoyed.

Summer time means lots of cold treats (mostly ice cream) and seafood! In August I went to one of my favorite foodie events in Austin, tried a famed burger, a new bbq trailer, and a new brewery!

Bites at Pay It Forward
The Pay It Forward with Daniel Curtis event has been one of my favorite annual “sip and stroll” events in Austin. It benefits the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation and includes an A-list lineup of restaurants.

Soft Serve at Sweet Daze Dessert Bar (Dallas)
I didn’t try many new places on this month’s 24-hr trip to Dallas but we did wait in line for late-night soft serve at this buzz worthy ice cream shop. Sadly, they were out of their “designer donuts” but they had ube (purple yam) soft serve. It’s Insta-worthy for a good reason!

Ice Cream at Heritage Creamery (Waco)
We stopped in Waco for some ice cream when coming back from Dallas and happily enjoyed cookie crumble cones. SO GOOD. It’s going to be very hard not making this a regular stop on the Dallas/Austin road trip.

Fish Taco Tuesday at Quality Seafood
Quality Seafood has a wide selection of fish and Tuesdays means fish tacos. They weren’t my favorite but they were still good. I got two tacos – grilled shrimp and blackened black drum fish.

Thai-Style Ice Cream at Holla Mode
While Holla Mode has two locations, their 45th Street location only serves dairy-free coconut milk ice cream. I opted for Oreos and fresh strawberries. For now I like Ice Scrapers more but I’ll have to give a final word after I try Holla Mode’s dairy ice cream. [See this post for more of my favorite cold desserts in Austin.]

Beef Cheek Sandwich with Kimchi at LeRoy and Lewis
This dish was disappointingly a bust for me but the bite of my friend’s mac-and-cheese stuffed quail was great. I’m looking forward to giving them another try.

New England Seafood Bake at The Bonneville with Harpoon Brewery
I had such a fun time at this special event at The Bonneville with Harpoon Brewery! We ate clam chowder, clam steamers, whole lobster, and Boston Crème Pie paired with four of Harpoon Brewery’s beers. My favorite beer was the Camp Wannamango, a mango pale ale that was divine! Harpoon Brewery is from Boston, so it was fun trying their beers!

Burger at Café No Se
I love a juicy burger! This one at Café No Se did not disappoint! I also love the pastries here. Kouign amann is my go-to but the croissants are great too.

Breakfast at Elizabeth St. Café
Speaking of pastries, I also love them at Elizabeth St. Café. On this occasion, I tried the ham and gruyere croissant and it is now easily my go-to dish. I liked their version of the beignet also.

Happy Hour at Chicon
For August’s Austin Food Blogger Alliance Happy Hour, we met up at Chicon. They spoiled us with complimentary drinks and an array of snacks, including charred avocado with pickled beet mayo and kale kurikake, carrot hummus, smoked trout dip, and Szechuan chicken wings. I want to go back for a full plate of charred avocado!

Homemade Rum Cake
Ever since Boyfriend came back from the Bahamas with a souvenir rum cake and I got a taste of that deliciousness, I’ve been dreaming about rum cake. Well, I finally made it! And it was AMAZING! MOIST.

Pizza at Little Deli & Pizza
It’s been a while since I’ve been there but now I can’t believe it’s been so long because it is fantastic! I enjoyed a slice of pepperoni and mushroom, a Greek salad, and a shortbread cookie. Nomnomnom. I would say it’s a best-kept secret, especially since it’s tucked into the neighborhood but everyone in the neighborhood knows how good it is; it was packed!

Craft Beers at Hi Sign Brewing
Surprisingly, the IPAs weren’t my absolute favorite on the day we visited Hi Sign Brewing. It was viciously hot outside, so the Blonde Ale was more my speed. They do have a strong double IPA and a fruited blonde ale. They also have wall art by one of my favorite Austin artists, Mike Johnston. Yes, Jay-Z as an astronaut.

Lunch at Clark’s Oyster Bar
We popped into Clark’s one weekend while we were in the neighborhood. It was around 3 pm, a weird hour for food, but it was packed! Since only their cold menu was available, we enjoyed fresh oysters, ceviche, and beef tartare, all very good! If you like seafood, you should give this place a try.

Mochi Bar at Whole Foods
Is this a dream or what?! Whole Foods in Austin now has a mochi bar where you can fill up a container and pay per ball. Yep, it’s as good as it sounds. For those unfamiliar, mochi ice cream is a glutinous flour wrapped around ice cream. The outside is a bit chewy. My favorite flavors were pineapple coconut, strawberry, and green tea. I also tried salted caramel and vanilla.

Lunch at Pizzeria Sorellina
This heirloom tomato dish changed my life! It’s got coconut “stracciatella” cheese, green coriander vinaigrette, and shaved serrano chili. The tomato flavors were vibrant and strong, and I never thought tomatoes could taste this way. We also tried a margherita pizza and the panna cotta with marinated watermelon. That heirloom tomato salad though. I would travel for that!

Try any new restaurants lately? Have a recipe I should try? Comment below!

Flavors of the Month is a monthly feature of some of the best dishes and restaurants I enjoyed.

[This post includes complimentary eats from restaurants and affiliate links to products I recommend. All opinions are my own.]

One of my goals this month was to decrease the eating out and impulsive food buys. I had a few meals out (like ALL OF NASHVILLE), but overall, there were more home-cooked weekend meals and less “swing by because I need a treat” buys. This doesn’t mean there weren’t mouth-watering eats. Take a look.

New Year’s Day Brunch
Fresh into the “less eating out” goal, we made a big New Year’s Day spread with friends. Sweet potato crostinis, shakshuka, Caesar salad, bacon-wrapped asparagus, and peach bellinis!

New Years Brunch

New Year’s Day Brisket
Later in the day, we enjoyed this incredible brisket made in the Big Green Egg. Mouth-watering!

Homemade Brisket Big Green Egg

Dinner at Ajo
Round Rock is limited in their quality restaurant options compared to Austin but it’s been fun discovering new places. Ajo is located in downtown Round Rock and was a really good meal. We enjoyed the Beef in the Raw (beef tartare), scallop crudo, lobster mac and cheese with pork cracklins, and Ajo Salad (Grilled chicken thighs, mixed greens, spinach, bleu cheese crumbles, avocado, bacon, figs, candied walnuts, and heirloom cherry tomatoes tossed in a homemade honey balsamic vinaigrette).

Craft Beer at Zilker Brewing Company
FINALLY! Finally visited Zilker Brewing Company when we had family in town. I loved their Trapp Marco IPA with the Spruce Juice IPA and Elfie Sunshine (surprisingly, I liked this smooth stout!) close behind. They do four beer flights and buy by the pint. Their tasting room seemed a little small but that’s because it was chilly out and no one was on the patio.

Zilker Brewing Company Austin Texas

Nashville
Did you see my post about the Best Restaurants in Nashville? We ate A LOT. There is so much good food in Nashville, I’d say it’s the next big foodie town!

Smoothies
There was a lot of breakfast smoothie making happening this month to curb the morning breakfast taco buy. I’ve been using the Ninja mixer I won at my company holiday party. [See more details about the Ninja QB3000SS Fit, Silver here.] We don’t measure ingredients, but each includes: one banana, three handfuls of kale, one or two handfuls of almonds, half to full cup of almond milk, and a few ice cubes. I tried protein powder in mine one morning and BLECH! Do you have any protein powder recommendations or any smoothie recommendations? Please let me know!

Craft Beer at Idle Vine Brewing Co.
A new brewery, Idle Vine Brewing, opened up in Pflugerville! On this first visit, I really enjoyed their IPA with the Idle Mind Pale Ale close behind. They have half pint and full pint options.

Idle Vine Brewery Austin Texas

Chocolate at Chocolaterie Tessa
I was so excited Chocolaterie Tessa invited me in to see the store and taste some chocolates! This a local Austin shop that makes fine, artisan chocolates free of artificial flavors, preservatives, and colors. Tessa was so sweet to let me try a variety of chocolates and my favorites were the dark chocolates and nutty chocolates. They have chocolates in shapes for Valentine’s and Texas, and they have small, medium, and large assorted chocolate boxes. For Valentine’s Day, they will have a special Belgian Chocolate Praline and bon bons in Strawberry Basil, Raspberry, and Cinnamon made with CatspringTea’s Yaupon. Love beer and chocolate? Check out their pairing Valentine’s event with Zilker Brewing Company.

Happy Hour at Isla

Austin Food Bloggers Alliance hosted a monthly happy hour with complimentary bites provided by Isla, a bar on West 4th Street. I loved the island vibes and Peruvian theme. While I wouldn’t come back specifically for the food, I wouldn’t mind ordering the chicken thigh anticuchos (skewered chicken thighs) and Bao Con Chicharron (steamed bun with smoked crispy pork belly) while having drinks. The Tituba drink is so good and they specialize in rum! Run flight, anyone?

Draft Mead from Meridian Hive
I finally got to try local meadery Meridian Hive’s mead. These draft meads are lightly carbonated and not too sweet. The Discovery is made with orange blossom honey, the Rhapsody has honey and blackberries, and the Haven has honey, peach, and ginger. Yes, all three are in cans and you can find them in stores all over Texas.

Sushi at Tomo
I wrote about Tomo last year [check out that feature here], and while this was the first visit back in a while, it still remains one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. I’ve been dreaming about that one monkfish liver with uni sushi bite ever since I swallowed it. The seared live eel bite was a dream too. I also loved the orange clam. And for sashimi, we always get: Japanese Madai, King Salmon with fresh wasabi, and a sashimi Nobu style.

It was a fantastic September of eating! I tried a handful of new places, including Dee Dee, Poke Poke, Prohibition Creamery, and Texas Sake Company. I also enjoyed Barley Swine again at their new location. Keep reading for all the details about these Austin Restaurants you should try.

Larb Moo and Sticky Rice with Mango at Dee Dee

Dee Dee has been on my list for a while because I heard their Northern Thai food was incredible. The reviews are correct! This trailer on the east side serves spicy, sizeable dishes and an unforgettable dessert.

Whiskey Chocolate Ice Cream at Prohibition Creamery
Boozy ice cream! Prohibition Creamery opened on the east side this year. I tried a scoop of their whiskey chocolate ice cream and it’s exactly what you’d expect. Vodka, rum, bourbon – they’ve got it in ice cream form. They also have mix-ins for your ice cream and milkshakes.

Eats in Houston

At the beginning of this month, I indulged in great eats in Houston. Check out this “best restaurants in Houston” post for the details.

Milk and Cookies Ice Cream at Lick

Did you know Lick has pints in-store? I picked up a pint of Milk and Cookies to enjoy. It’s brown sugar ice cream with oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough. The milk flavor was stronger than I expected and the cookie dough morsels were my favorite.

Sake Tasting at Texas Sake Company

My friend Amy of Sushi in the ATX and Our ATX hosted a sake tasting at Texas Sake Company. The company brews the sake right in Austin, and it was interesting to taste and learn about the different types. The Junmai Nama was my favorite one. I also loved the beautiful and tasty sushi cookies by Sharp Cookie. Head over for your own tasting and or sake cocktail happy hour.

Lunch at Geraldine’s

I finally tried out Geraldine’s during lunch. Our table started with the Ceviche and Beet Salad for appetizers and I had the Braised Short Rib Sandwich as my entree. Surprisingly, the beet salad was my favorite of the meal. The sandwich left more to be desired but the side salad had a good vinaigrette.

geraldines-austin

Salmon Poke Bowl Aloha-Style at Poke Poke

Poke is the new trendy dish in Austin. Raw fish tossed or marinated in seasoning and/or sauce is served by itself or with rice. I tried the salmon special marinated in shoyu sesame oil, green onions, and spices. I love sashimi and tartare but I think poke might be too much raw fish at once for me. It was tasty at first, but I would prefer to get it with more rice next time. Otherwise, it was a fun place to try poke.

Peppercorn Chicken with Rice at Coco’s Cafe

I hadn’t been to this restaurant since college but their popular peppercorn chicken is still as crispy and satisfying as before!

Juice and Snacks at The Honest Bar

When I tried the workouts at The Lab, I also got to try the juice and snacks at their in-house The Honest Bar. My favorites were the Greenie smoothie (Spinach, Kale, Banana, Pear, Spirulina, and Almond Milk), Fall Kale Salad, Wild Animal Juice (cucumbers, celery, lemon, apples, ginger root, and cayenne), and the Apple Cinnamon Energy Balls.

Wagyu Tartare and Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich at Delicious

For my friend Peter’s birthday, we met up at Delicious, a new-ish spot in South Austin. They are a grocery store, bar, and counter-service restaurant. The Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich was spicy and the chicken was good. I enjoyed the Wagyu Tartare more. The staff is very hospitable and made sure our every need was met.

Muffuletta and Soft Serve at Mr. Mc’s Grocery Market
This warm and gooey muffuletta sandwich was heavenly. This traditional New Orleans sandwich has olive salad, mortadella, salami, mozzarella, ham, and provolone. I also had to try Laura Sawicki’s soft serve. A vanilla and chocolate twist with carrot cake crumbles was delightful!

Happy Hour at BaseCamp

For our Austin Food Blogger Alliance happy hour this month, we tried the dishes at BaseCamp, a sports bar on 5th Street near Congress. We tried the beef slider, buffalo wings, dry rub wings, barbecue wings, shrimp tostada, and queso. My favorites were the shrimp tostada (with black bean and avocado) and the slider.

9-Course Dinner with Drink Pairings at Barley Swine

My friends and I ended the month well with a special dinner at one of the best restaurants in Austin – Barley Swine. I had convinced my friend Dan to bid on this special dinner for six at the Pay It Forward event and we were very excited to win! The restaurant is now in a new, spacious location with a patio on North Burnet. Take a look at our menu:

Each dish was thoughtful, creative, and tantalizing. My favorites were the Shiitake Pasta (it’s like a soup dumpling!), the chocolate ice cream sandwich with honeycomb and pecan, the masa cornbread, and the Akaushi Ribeye with bone marrow hash and corn pudding.
