Where to Find Kouign Amann in Austin http://www.fearlesscaptivations.com/2017/06/20/find-kouign-amann-austin/ http://www.fearlesscaptivations.com/2017/06/20/find-kouign-amann-austin/#comments Tue, 20 Jun 2017 12:07:01 +0000 http://www.fearlesscaptivations.com/?p=5951 Find the best kouign amann in Austin, Texas. This French pastry is a must-try! My mom gave me my love of pastries. When I was a kid, we regularly visited a French bakery on Saturdays and come home with a box of pastries. Sometimes, half of the box’s contents was already gone by the time we arrived home. One of the pastries I loved was the palmier, a heart-shaped cookie-like pastry that was crunchy, caramelized, and sweet. While it’s been a long time since I’ve had one of those, one of my favorite pastries – the kouign amann – is a strong reminder of the palmier. What is Kouign Amann? First, you’re probably wondering how to pronounce the name: Kween Ah-mahn. I love the crisp flakiness of the pastry, the buttery layers, and the sweet, caramelized crisp on the outside. Similar to puff pastry or a croissant, the kouign amann is light and fluffy with many layers. Kouign amann has layers of butter and sugar on the inside and caramelized sugar on the outside. The flavor is similar to a palmier, the very crispy, heart-shaped pastry. Where to Find Kouign Amann in Austin, TX Kouign Amann isn’t as readily available as a […]

Here are 10 tips that can help feed your wanderlust until your next trip! 1. Take day trips and weekend trips. Are there areas a few hours from your city you can explore? Living in Austin, the Hill Country is not far to go visit breweries or weekend trips to Fredericksburg, San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas are also possibilities. Day trips to check out the barbecue in Lockhart or lake in New Braunfels are also on the to-do list. What are places within an hour to three hours near you? 2. Take a staycation. May brought many great eats, including trying Austin restaurants Salt Traders Coastal Cooking, Bonhomie, and Tumble 22 for the first time. I also added places to my Dallas eats list. Oysters, Chowda Fries, Scallops, and Mousse at Salt Traders Coastal Cooking I’ve been eyeing this restaurant for MONTHS, especially since Boyfriend lived in Round Rock for some time. But it took him moving away for us to finally get there. They have $1 Gulf Oysters, which was a nice surprise. I do love oysters, and they were a good size. The Chowda Fries are a big bowl of French fries drenched in clam chowder. It was tasty in the first couple of bites but felt very heavy. I like their take on the fries but wouldn’t order them again. The scallop entrée was delish, though the horseradish was strong. The scallops were cooked perfectly. The best part of the meal was the dessert, coconut mousse with strawberries. The mousse was a little hard/still frozen when it arrived, but we endured and licked the plate. Altogether, I think they do seafood very well and is a […]

Ethical Travel Remember my post about visiting elephants in Thailand? I talked about why it’s NOT a good idea to ride elephants, even though it’s prevalent and many travelers have it on their bucket lists. Since reading much about the elephants in Thailand, I’ve thought a lot about other bucket list items that might not be ethical for animals. Other items include baiting animals for close encounters, especially whale sharks. This post gives a great explanation about swimming with whale sharks. Most animals are wild and it’s not natural for them to alter their eating habits by being baited or have close encounters with humans for […]

Favorite Austin Eats: Burgers, Fries, and Shakes at Hopdoddy Burger Bar http://www.fearlesscaptivations.com/2017/05/16/favorite-austin-eats-burgers-hopdoddy/ Tue, 16 May 2017 14:24:55 +0000 http://www.fearlesscaptivations.com/?p=5813 Looking for burgers in Austin? Hopdoddy Burger Bar is the place in Austin for craft burgers, fries, and shakes. If you are looking for a burger in Austin, there’s a general consensus about where to go. It might not be “old school” but it’s quickly becoming a classic in our foodie city. We have a lot of options for burgers in Austin, ranging from fast food to restaurants that have burgers sharing the menu with steaks. Hopdoddy is a good in-between option for something faster, gourmet, and unique to Austin. The restaurant chain also has fantastic options for fries and shakes, which makes the whole dining experience better! Burgers I won’t beat around the bush. Let’s talk about the main attraction. Their burgers are focused on natural ingredients. That means happy cows (humanely raised and free of antibiotics and hormones), hand-cut fries, and scratch-made, fresh-baked buns. Sure, that sounds good and all, but the burger combinations are what I think makes them shine. Here are a few of my favorite burgers on the menu: The Classic Burger: Angus Beef, Red Leaf Lettuce, White Onion, Beefsteak Tomato, Sassy Sauce Primetime: Texas Akaushi Beef, Brie Cheese, Arugula, Caramelized Onions, Truffle Aioli, Steak […]

Marfa, Texas. A population of about 1,800 and put on the map by artist Donald Judd. Marfa is a hipster paradise as if you took a tiny sliver of Austin and plopped it in the middle of nowhere. I wanted to visit because I had heard about its charm, its notable restaurants, and its undefinable quirkiness. This little town has gems and is a great day trip when visiting West Texas. Art is what made Marfa popular and underneath the charm of the small town, it’s the heartbeat that draws artists to come discover and create. The Chinati Foundation is not to be missed and is worth the admission fee to take the tour and talk with the guide. Maybe it’s the art or maybe it’s being in a new and unfamiliar place, but Marfa inspires you to create. Thinking about visiting? Here’s ALL THE INFORMATION you need to plan your trip, including when to visit, where to stay, where to eat, and what to do. When to Visit Visit in the fall or spring. The summer will get up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the winter months will get […]

Flavors of the Month: April 2017 http://www.fearlesscaptivations.com/2017/05/03/flavors-month-april-2017/ Wed, 03 May 2017 16:19:54 +0000 http://www.fearlesscaptivations.com/?p=5734 Flavors of the Month is a monthly feature of some of the best dishes and restaurants I enjoyed. April brought a visit to the new Kemuri Tatsu-ya, a food event, Ethiopian food, and new ice cream flavors! All the Eats at Live Fire Live Fire! has been one of my favorite foodie events in Austin. There are always so many good bites from restaurants and I discover new wines I like. This year was no different! The weather was also perfect! Chicken Over Rice at Halal Bros The first time I ate Halal Bros, I was sitting on a sidewalk downtown at an ungodly hour, probably around 3am. The food truck was a big hit back then. Lucky Austin college kids get a different kind of late night”fast food” that doesn’t require a packed drive-through. 😉 Halal Bros has gone on to open a brick-and-mortar off Guadalupe by campus and now a second location up north off Braker Lane. My usual order of Chicken over Rice brought back my insatiable taste buds. The mixture of the chicken, rice, and sauces is addicting! Pizza at Desano There has been no shortage of new pizza spots in Austin, and national restaurant Desano opened their fifth location […]
