July 1, 2017

Captivations is a monthly feature with links, stories, and news that captivated me. I also talk about what happened in my life this month. Take a look at all the things captivating me lately. This June, I encountered quite a few inspiring articles that would inspire people to make a difference, whether it’s fighting for others or bettering ourselves.

The Career Advice No One Will Give You
This was a smart article and not only to examine a career but also life.

Watched: Wonder Woman
Have y’all seen the new Wonder Woman movie yet? How FIERCE was the beginning of that movie?!

Popsicle Art
This art exhibit in Taiwan is interesting. Students created 100 popsicle models set in polyester resin made from polluted water from 100 different areas.

50 Years Later
This month we celebrated 50 years since the Loving vs. Virginia decision allowed interracial marriage in the U.S. It’s hard to imagine what it was like before then but the New York Times shared some of the beautiful stories. I’m thankful for the people that paved the way!

Ask a Syrian Girl
At a non-profit meeting earlier this year, I listened to a teenage Syrian girl talk about how she was thankful to be in America because it meant she could go back to school and she would feel safe. Check out this Teen Vogue video where six Syrian girls talk about life in America. It gives perspective to why helping refugees is a necessity. They are people, kids, wanting to live a better life.

Stay Cool with Cold Treats
Hello, SUMMER. There have already been a couple of unbearable days in Austin, Texas, so you’ll need my list of 30 cold treats to keep cool!

John Steinbeck on Falling in Love
I enjoyed this letter from author John Steinbeck to his son about falling in love.

Families That Can’t Afford Summer
This was an eye-opening New York Times article. I had a stay-at-home mom growing up and I worked as a summer nanny and camp counselor in college, so the issue is something I encountered but didn’t think much about. The article talks about some lacking solutions. I’m not quite sure what can be done about this.

The Difference Between Inspiration and Imitation
I enjoyed this short read about inspiration and imitation. With so much content being put out into the world these days, it’s easy to see similarities and grab inspiration and try to duplicate results. This was a great reminder to find your voice and forge your own path.

Staycation + Spa
To celebrate Boyfriend’s birthday, we had a staycation at Sonesta Bee Cave, great dinner at Apis, and a relaxing few hours at Milk and Honey Spa. (That photo up there is me with the sweet hotel bathroom mirror and after the spa.) I got a Hydrafacial and a manicure while Boyfriend got a massage and facial. I’m going to have to find a way to work in some spa time more often!

Profound Experience or Selfie Opportunity?
Seeing Yayoi Kusama’s exhibit in Houston was an incredible experience, but I will admit, after taking it in for a few seconds, I took out my phone for a few photos. This article about Yayoi Kusama’s amazing art exhibit and how our culture experiences life these days made me think.

We Need Better Postnatal Care
This Vox article opened my eyes to the needs of women after they give birth. People may think everything’s all back to “normal” after the baby is born but emotional, physical, and mental changes happen on top of the stress of caring for a new life. Postpartum care is an area where the U.S. can work on for better workplace and healthcare policies.

Read: Sounds Like Me by Sara Bareilles
I loved listening to Sara Bareilles’ memoir Sounds Like Me. She is honest, vulnerable, and incredibly brave. There were times like she was talking about things I struggled with when I was younger and still today. Sara Bareilles is a talented songwriter, and I liked hearing the stories behind her songs. I recommend her audiobook because you’ll get to hear her singing and her personality.
